About

Community Bike Works provides inner-city children living in at-risk situations with meaningful work-ethic alternatives to gangs, drugs and the streets. We use bicycles, peer role models and adult mentors to develop and nurture relationships and to engage youth; and once engaged, influence their behavior and their outlook about school and life. Community Bike Works offers an innovative series of youth development programs to the students of Allentown and the Lehigh Valley who need us most. We serve approximately 350 students each year in our Earn a Bike program, which is offered at our Allentown learning center, at schools in the Allentown and Bethlehem school districts, and at the Orefield campus of KidsPeace. Once engaged in Earn a Bike, students may participate in our full range of programs until they turn 18. All of our programs are offered at no cost to families.

Current projects

In Earn a Bike, students learn bike mechanics and safety while practicing reading, writing, teamwork and work ethic skills. At the end of class, they earn their refurbished bicycle and a new helmet! Other programs include Earn a Book, a literacy and homework program, After-School Drop-in, a structured mentoring program, and Youth Leadership, which is designed to get older students thinking about career readiness and community service. Youth Leaders are invited to apply for an Apprenticeship, where students use the skills learned at CBW to receive their first paycheck.
